fifteen thousand bucks

fifteen thousand bucks

If given $15,000 to create your camera setup, what would you spend it on. Prices taken using BH Photo's website.

Nikon D3 - $5000
Nikon D300 - $1800
Sigma 300mm ƒ/2.8 - $2500
Kenko 1.4x teleconverter - $200
Kenko 2x teleconverter -$100
Nikon 70-200mm ƒ/2.8 VR - $1500
Nikon 14-24mm ƒ/2.8 - $1500
Nikon 24-70 ƒ/2.8 - $1700
Nikon 105mm VR - $700

Well, that's what I'd spend it on anyway, unless Canon comes out with something that can trounce the D3. If I was given less, I would've gone with Canon however. As I have said before, on the lower end side Canon wins hands down, but on the higher end side Nikon is better. I tag whoever wants to do this.

Camera Equipment I Own

I've been queried numerous times regarding what equipment I use, so here's a list:
Canon EOS 40D
Canon EF 50mm ƒ/1.8
Canon EF 70-200 ƒ/4L
Canon EF 17-40 ƒ/4L
Pentax ME
Pentax 50mm ƒ/2
Pentax 70-150 ƒ/3.5
Pentax 2x teleconverter
Couple circular polarizers
Couple UV filters
Canon backpack
Canon monopod 100
Hand strap
Some tripod from the 80s
Vivitar flash
Giottos Rocket Blower (VERY handy for sensor dust)
My eyes and a viewfinder ;)

well for me it would be:
Canon EOS Rebel XSi (450D)$799.95 I don't need anything really better. Don't do any sports photography and the like to warrant a high end full frame camera. Plus I need the live view for astrophotography.
Canon100mm f/2.8 Macro lens $469.95
Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM $1,099.95
Bogen / Manfrotto 458B NeoTec Pro Photo Tripod Legs with 3275 (410) Compact Geared Head (Quick Release) - Supports 11 lb (5 kg) $561.95

Oh hell I'm not even close to 15k :faint: fine! Since I can't find the Canon 1D Mark II on BHphoto I'll take the 1Ds Mark III$7,999.95 :evillaugh:

Because with the 1.4x I'd only lose one stop of light and get roughly a 420mm lens, so it'd be ƒ/4, and with the 2x it'd be a 600mm lens at ƒ/5.6 which isn't too slow for that long of a lens. Thus why I didn't have a longer lens than 300mm on there.

I’ve long been fascinated by the Canon verses Nikon choice that most photographers usually find that they have to make at some point. For me it was easy, long ago a friend picked up a Canon FT With a Canon FL 50mm 1.8 lens for me at the PX overseas and later I won a Canon T70 with a picture of my son [link] so I was, at the time a solid Canon user. When I decided to buy a digital SLR Canon offered the best system that I could afford so my photographic future is tied to Canon but still I sometimes wonder why a given person chooses one over the other both have wonderful equipment and are used by accomplished professionals and armatures. Does it come down to price?
Is there an unbiased source that provides good comparisons of photographic equipment?
I shoot Canon right now with a 40D and it's great, but man does the D3 handle noise well, even better than the 1Ds Mark III.

Why the 70-300mm over the 70-200mm ƒ/2.8 IS?

because on the long end 200mm is not enough for me....had a tele that only went to 200 and it drove me nuts

Wow, that would be nice. The Mark III doesn't have much of a noise problem until you get to ISO 1600
